چکیده

We have imaged a region of ∼ 5 ′ extent surrounding Sgr A* in the HI 21 cm-line absorption using the Very Large Array. A Gaussian decomposition of the optical depth spectra at positions within of ∼ 2 ′ (∼ 5 pc at 8.5 kpc) of Sgr A* detects a wide line underlying the many narrow absorption lines. The wide line has a mean peak optical depth of 0.32 ± 0.12 centered at a mean velocity of Vlsr = –4 ± 15 km s . The mean full width at half maximum is 119 ± 42 km s. Such a wide line is absent in e-mail:[email protected] e-mail:[email protected] email:[email protected] email:[email protected] 1 2 Dwarakanath, Goss, Zhao & Lang the spectra at positions beyond ∼ 2 from Sgr A*. The positionvelocity diagrams in optical depth reveal that the wide line originates in various components of the circumnuclear disk (radius ∼ 1.3) surrounding Sgr A*. These components contribute to the optical depth of the wide line in different velocity ranges. The position-velocity diagrams do not reveal any diffuse feature which could be attributed to a large number of HI clouds along the line of sight to Sgr A*. Consequently, the wide line has no implications either to a global population of shocked HI clouds in the Galaxy or to the energetics of the interstellar medium as was earlier thought.

Constraints on distances to Galactic Centre non-thermal filaments from HI absorption

We have studied HI absorption towards three non-thermal filaments (NTFs) Sgr C, G359.54+0.18 and G359.79+0.17 using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). Our study, for the first time, constrains the distance of the Sgr C NTF and the HII region seen associated with the NTF in the sky plane, to within a few hundred parsecs from the Galactic Centre (GC). A molecular cloud with a velocity of...

Detection of OH and wide HI absorption toward B 0218 + 357

We present deep GMRT OH and WSRT HI absorption spectra of the z = 0.6846 gravitational lens toward B0218+357. Both the 1665 MHz and 1667 MHz OH lines are clearly detected for the first time while a new wide absorption component was detected (at low significance) in the HI spectrum; the OH spectra yielded an OH column density of NOH = 2.3 × 10 cm−2. The ratio of 1667 and 1665 MHz equivalent widt...

Detection of HI 21 cm - line absorption in the Warm Neutral Medium and in the Outer Arm of the Galaxy

Using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, we have detected HI 21 cm-line absorption in the Warm Neutral Medium of the Galaxy toward the ex-tragalactic source 3C147. This absorption, at an LSR velocity of –29±4 km s −1 with a full width at half maximum of 53±6 km s −1 , is associated with the Perseus Arm of the Galaxy. The observed optical depth is (1.9±0.2)×10 −3. The estimated spin tempe...

The detection of the ( J , K ) = ( 18 , 18 ) line of NH 3 ⋆

A study of the metastable (J, K)=(18,18) line of ammonia (NH3) is presented aiming at better defining the physical properties of molecular gas in extreme environments. The spectra were collected with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope and are analyzed in combination with other data using a rotation diagram (Boltzmann plot). The first astronomical detection of the metastable (J, K) = (18,18) line of...

The kinetic temperature of a molecular cloud at redshift 0 . 9 : Ammonia in the gravitational lens PKS 1830 – 211

Context. Little is known about the structure of the interstellar medium and the nature of individual clouds in galaxies at intermediate redshifts. The gravitational lens toward PKS1830–211 offers the unique possibility to study this interstellar gas with high sensitivity and angular resolution in a molecular cloud that existed half a Hubble time ago. Aims. This multi-line study aims at a better...
